Interview with Roman Pogorelov

In the year of prime sport events, the publishing house "Argumenty I Fakty"(AiF) and the LG Electronics company jointly organized the Football Donor Day. The partners managed to turn blood donation into a fest day and a long-awaited meeting of friends. The event was attended by famous athletes, coaches, film actors and directors, politicians. Next to such famous, and, by the way, experienced donors, employees and readers of the newspaper were also not afraid to sit in the donor’s chair. Roman Pogorelov, Head of the Digital Projects Sales Service at the (AiF), will tell us more about the donor’s partnership event.

How did it come up with Donor's day in “AiF”?

June 14, 2018 is a very important day. Firstly, the World Cup began on this day, and many of our and LG Electronics employees are passionate fans. Secondly, June 14 is World Donor Day. That is why we decided to unite these two fests, to unite efforts with our long-time partner, the LG company, and to hold a joint Donor Day together, inviting sportsmen, football players, show business stars and our friends. We held the event on June 13 (later I will explain why this date was chosen), together with Russian FMBA Blood Center.

Did the event receive support from the management of the publishing house?

The management met the idea of Donor’s Day together with the athletes with great enthusiasm. No one doubts that the donor movement is very important that blood donation saves lives. According to Ruslan Novikov, general manager of the “AiF”, “donation is an important, charitable, beautiful act.” Therefore, the management of the publishing house has done everything possible to make the Donor Day interesting, fun, and popular.

You have managed the Donor’s day together with LG company. What are the benefits and drawbacks of such partnership in organization?

I see only benefits. LG Electronics has great experience in such events. This Donor’s day was the 91st for the company. Over 20 years in Russia, the company has already held almost 100 such events! Therefore, we decided to provide the Day with a reliable and experienced partner. I can say that this approach seems to me very productive, you can insure against possible missteps.

How did you share the duties?

The biggest part was on our partner - LG company. We provided the place, information support, told about to our readers, partners, subscribers in social networks (by the way, many of them came to participate in Donor Day), together with LG invited celebrities to donate blood.

Was it difficult to hold the Donor's day with celebrities? How did you draw them together in one day and one place?

It was difficult. They all are very busy with agenda, work-out schedule and filming. Of course, our football team could not participate, they do not donate blood before important competitions. We also would like to invite CSKA team, there are many fans working here, in AiF. Because of their busy schedule, we had to refuse from this idea.

But we were very lucky to have many famous sportsmen: Valery Gazzayev, one of the most titled Russian coaches and now is a State Duma deputy, Leonid Slutsky his former colleague and teammate in CSKA, as well as Sergei Ovchinnikov, nicknamed Boss, in the recent past Dynamo, Lokomotiv and the Russian national team goalkeeper.

In addition, actresses Glafira Tarkhanova, Anastasia Makeeva, Alena Khmelnitskaya, film director Yegor Konchalovsky, TV star Larisa Verbitskaya, designer Alisa Tolkacheva, choreographer, dancer and showman Yevgeny Papunaishvili, and State Duma deputy Mikhail Degtyarev, have participated in our Donor’s Day.

Who was more difficult to negotiate with movie stars or with sportsmen?

Actors have as busy schedule, as sportsmen. So, it was difficult for everyone to find a slot. But they did, because they know donor movement is important and requires support.

How did newspaper ‘staff like the event? Have many of them participated?

Yes, a lot. We had a queue. Employees of the publishing house, our colleagues from LG, a lot of our readers and followers from social networks participated. Wednesday is a day off in our publishing house (June 13 was on Wednesday). The newspaper is gone to press on Tuesday, and Wednesday is our free day. That’s why we planned a Donor’s day on the 13th. From Thursday, we start preparing the next issue and the staff would not be able to take part in the event.

And our traditional question: what would you wish to donors and people, who are going to join donor program?

Don't be afraid. Being a donor is a responsible thing, but not scary.
