The quarantine of plasma event was held in the Pirogov University

01.04.22
On March 19 and 26 Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University together with the Blood Center named after O.K. Gavrilov carried out measures for the quarantine of plasma.

First it was carried out in 2019 before the presentation of diplomas to university graduates.

Many students who donated whole blood for the last time in 2019-2020 came and donated two test tubes of blood for examination. It is necessary for a mandatory laboratory examination of the donor not less than 4 months after donation (and not more than 3 years) in order to exclude the possibility of the presence of infectious agents in the received plasma, which is associated with the seronegative period of many bloodborne infections. If the donor is healthy, the plasma produced from the previous donation can then be released. And if the donor has not passed the examination, the plasma becomes unsuitable for transfusion and can be disposed of. Events within the framework of the action were attended by 90 people who underwent examination, and “saved” 90 doses of plasma from being destroyed off. Also, 18 people entered the Register of bone marrow donors.

“We take a responsible approach to organizing the donor movement at the university. For us, it is not just Donor Days and Weeks, but is an integrated approach. We would like to attract not only a large number of donors, we strive for the participation of a large number of responsible donors. Therefore, we usually say that almost everyone can donate blood, and only a responsible donor can come for an examination for plasma quarantine. All organizers of the donor movement should carry out such events, because the vast majority of them were canceled in 2020 and 2021, which means that there are a large number of doses of non-quarantined plasma” - Tigran Muradyan, the head of the donor movement of the Russian National Research Medical University.

During the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University became the only organization that did not cancel a single donor event and even introduced additional days. Despite this, donor activity was reduced due to the fact that some of the students were working remotely in the regions and the rest of them participated in the fight against COVID-19 together with doctors. That is why the campaign made it possible for donors to complete the good deed. It is important to note that whole blood was not taken at the action - only a donor examination.

“Donating two blood tubes for plasma quarantine is just one step. Preparation for such an action begins a month in advance: we contact donors who, for various reasons, stopped donating blood at Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University or at the Gavrilov Blood Center, or became a donor of another Blood Center or blood transfusion department, without passing the “last” test tube at the Gavrilov Blood Center. We remind them of the plasma quarantine process and talk about the importance of attending this action. Only remind, because we explain the essence of plasma quarantine to the donor 2-3 times at different points at regular donor events at the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University. We specifically choose two Saturdays in order to create the most convenient conditions to attend. Remote registration through the personal account of the Pirogov RNRMU saves time. Thanks to the well-coordinated work of the Blood Center and our volunteers during the event, donors quickly go through all the procedures, and can enter the Federal Register of Bone Marrow Donors” - Anastasia Kozhina, organizer of the donor movement of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University.

Many donors came with children and other family members. All participants were presented with memorable donor souvenirs from the Russian National Research Medical University and the National Health Fund. The organizers express their gratitude to all participants of the action.
