Give a chance to live - FMBA of Russia launches a large-scale information and educational campaign on bone marrow donation

12.07.23
The All-Russian action «Learn about bone marrow donation» starts on July 12, 2023. Organizers: FMBA of Russia - operator of the Federal Register of Bone Marrow and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors, Coordination Center for the Development of Donorship at the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation and National Health Fund.

The Federal Medical-Biological Agency will inform the population about bone marrow donation and attract donors. In the leading institutions of the Agency - Kirov Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion of the FMBA of Russia (Kirov), Blood Center FMBA of Russia (Moscow), Russian Research Institute of Hematology and Transfusion FMBA of Russia (St. Petersburg) - excursions and open days for potential bone marrow donors and media representatives will be held.

On July 24 Kirov KNIIGiPK organizes an open day «Bone marrow donation: how does it work?» - On the day of donor cells preparation an excursion will be held on the department of transfusion and processing of hematopoietic stem cells (including a conversation with the donor) and a lecture-presentation on bone marrow donation. «Join the Federal Register of Bone Marrow - Give Hope for Life!» will be held in the Kirov KNIIGiPK on August 3 together with the youth public movement «Molodezhka ONF».

The FMBA Blood Center of Russia together with the National Health Fund will organize an action on July 24 to join the Federal Register of Bone Marrow Donors at VDNH (a mobile blood procurement complex will be involved). Such action will be held in the period from July 31 to August 4 in Gorky Park (date to be confirmed). It is planned to work widely with non-profit organizations to involve citizens in bone marrow donation during the campaign, to conduct mobile blood collection events at HLA-typing and entry into the Federal Register of Bone Marrow Donors in State authorities, public organizations.

Contacts for cooperation on media issues:

- Kirov - Natalia Malysheva, +7 909 140-12-77;

- Moscow - Alexandra Grandson, +7 964 638-13-23;

- St. Petersburg - Olena Belykh, +7 921 795-91-98;

With the support of the autonomous non-profit organization «Institute of Internet Development» a broad information campaign will be held at the Runet sites to attract potential donors.

The theme of July is «Find a genetic twin». For patients who need bone marrow transplantation, grafting is the only way to defeat the disease. However, the chance to find a donor is 1 in 10,000, because the donor and the patient must be «genetic twins».

The theme of August - «Live twice» - information campaign dedicated to the role of the donor sharing blood cells with another person.

In order to facilitate the search for donors, the Federal Register of Bone Marrow and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors of Russia has been established. The more people on the register, the greater the chance of finding a compatible donor.

On September 1, 2022, the Federal Reserve Service of Russia began to administer the register. It currently contains information on more than 204,000 donors. The immediate task is to rapidly increase the donor base to 500,000 people or more, which will allow us to reduce the waiting for donor cell transplants by patients.

Entering the register of bone marrow donors is simple: you need to apply through the website of the State Services or in person to the recruitment center and give 3 milliliters of blood for testing.

According to social surveys conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion in 2022, public awareness of bone marrow donation is extremely insufficient. More than half of the respondents (54%) heard about little or it was difficult to answer, a third of respondents assessed the information about bone marrow donation as insufficient.

We invite representatives of mass media to take part in the action, organize publications about bone marrow donation, one of the most effective and sometimes indispensable methods of treatment of oncological blood diseases.
