FMBA of Russia together with the National Health Fund launched the information project «Knowledge Base on Plasma Donation»

22.08.23
Blood donation is an indispensable part of country’s health care system. Regular donors give hope for the life and health of millions of patients. Previously, only whole blood was transfused, today medicine gives preference to «component therapy». The patient is transfused with components of blood that he needs, such as platelets, granulocytes or plasma. Moreover, modern medicine is impossible without blood products - drugs that are obtained from donor plasma. Plasma components and plasma drug donors are an important part of the treatment of many serious diseases.

New project «Knowledge base on plasma donation», developed by the National Health Fund together with the FMBA Russia and the Russian Medical Scientific and Production Center «Rosplasma» will explain why blood plasma can be called gold and why plasma donation develops as a special direction of the Blood Service, within which plasma center specializing in the reception of plasma donors are open.

The aim of the project is to raise the level of knowledge of citizens about the use of donated blood and plasma in the treatment of patients: methods of preparation and application of components, production of drugs. The information of the project will be placed in social networks of the National Health Fund https://vk.com/nfrzmoscow and institutions of FMBA Russia and «Rosplasma» FMBA Russia.

Blood plasma is a liquid part of the blood, which is yellowish in color, 90% consists of water, contains proteins necessary for clotting the blood and protecting the body from infections: albumin, immunoglobulin, fibrinogen.

Plasma proteins are used to save the lives of people suffering from burns, shock, injuries, and other emergencies. They are necessary in the treatment of rare diseases, such as haemophilia, autoimmune diseases. People with these diseases can live a long, productive life with plasma-based treatments.

Every year in Russia about a million people need albumin and immunoglobulin preparations, which are made from human blood plasma proteins. Plasma proteins cannot be artificially produced. Plasma can only be obtained from donors. Medicinal preparations are produced at pharmaceutical enterprises from virus-tested plasma of healthy donors. About 12 months pass from the moment of donation to the preparation of the drug.

The reception of plasma donors in Russia is carried out both by the departments of the Blood Service and by the plasma center. The blood service harvests plasma mainly for clinical use according to the needs of hospitals in the region. You can specify the possibility of plasma donation and make an appointment in the nearest blood service by calling the registry (https://yadonor.ru/donorstvo/gde-sdat/where/) or on the portal «Gosuslugi».

The specialized plasma blank for producing medicinal preparations is carried out by:

- 14 branches of the Russian Medical Research and Production Center «Rosplasma» FMBA Russia. Plasmocenters have been opened in Kazan, Kirov, Nizhny Novgorod, Cheboksary, Vyatskie Polyana, Volzhsk, Kirovo-Chepetsk, Kostroma, Kotelnich, Omutninsk, Sovetsk, Sloboda, Shemordan, Yaransk. This year «Concept of increase of blood plasma procurement for production of medicines for the period up to 2030» was approved in Russia. The concept aims to fully meet the country’s needs for plasma-based drugs. Participation in the implementation of the concept to date has been confirmed by the Blood Service of eight regions. The FMBA Blood Service’s plasma centers and facilities will be modernized, as well as the active promotion of donations and social work.
