Anyone may participate in donor drive in aid of children with cancer from February15th until March1st at the Vologda blood transfusion station

Medical statistical data is grim: 200 thousand children are being diagnosed with cancer all over the world annually. There are 233 children with malignant neoplasms today in Vologda region. Doctors detect forty new cases of children cancer annually. Latest methods of cancer treatment allow a patient to recover or to control a disease for a long time.

Given the high relevance of the problem, Vologda regional blood transfusion station has announced a start of two weeks donor marathon “From heart to heart”. It started on the International Childhood Cancer Day (February 15th) and will be over by March 1st. The main objective of the event is to draw attention of citizens to importance of regular blood donation. Organizations and active donors were invited to participate.

Everyone can donate blood and blood components for little patients of the Onco-Hematology Division of the regional Children’s Clinic. Anyone can leave notes on colorful Valentine's Day card and pick out a child's drawing as a token. All those wishes from citizens and souvenirs from Blood Service will be presented to kids at the end of the event on March 1st.

Members of youth orthodox movement “Will” were the first guests at the blood transfusion center on February 15th. Michael Maksimov, the head of the movement, noticed that anyone might be in need of blood transfusion at some point: “It’s written in the Gospel – love your neighbor as yourself. Donation is something that we can do to help each other».

About 100 people donated blood and blood plasma on the first day of the marathon. Among them there were members of Vologda regional public organization “Association of Nursing and Health Care Specialists”. All of them are active donors.

“We can get platelet concentrate from such donors. It’s the component needed for onco-hematology patients’ treatment. The platelet concentrate’s shelf life is 5 days, that is why it is crucial to restock it constantly. We invite donors regularly”, – said blood transfusion center employee.

Everyone who wants to take part in donor marathon can make an appointment on the medical organization’s website and by phone 8-8172-75-05-42.
